Lewes MP, Norman Baker, has called on the local water and sewerage companies, South East Water & Southern Water to combine their billing so that customers get one bill to cover both their water and wastewater costs.
At the current time, customers in much of the Lewes constituency receive two bills - one for water services and another for sewerage services - whereas residents in nearly all other parts of the country either have one company dealing with both water or sewage or, where there are two, a joint billing arrangement exists.
Following a meeting with Philip Fletcher, Director General of OFWAT, the local MP is calling on Southern Water and South East Water to either start a joint billing system to make it clearer for residents or to put a clear statement on each bill indicating that it is for water or sewerage services only and that customers should expect another bill for the other service.
Commenting on this Norman says:
"I think it is important that residents know what to expect in terms of billing for water and sewerage services and that the billing systems are clear. The current situation where residents receive two bills has been very confusing for people, especially those who have moved into the area from other parts of the country where joint billing is in place.
"Ideally, I would like to see Southern Water and South East Water introduce a joint billing system which would be both clearer for residents and which may also be more cost efficient for the companies themselves. Failing this, however, I think the companies should at least be prepared to put a prominent statement on their bills indicating what the bill covers and that customers will receive another bill for the other service."
