Lewes MP, Norman Baker, has today demanded a swift response from Post Office Ltd following the closure of the main Lewes Post Office due to flooding.

Contractors are currently working to find and resolve the cause of the flooding and a Post Office spokesperson has said that they hope to reopen the branch by tomorrow morning at the latest.

There are not any interim measures in place for the duration of the closure of the High Street branch and the nearest alternative Post Office is in the Landport area of Lewes.

Commenting on this Norman says:

"This closure is a significant inconvenience for local residents and businesses in and simply reinforces my long-held view that there needs to be two main Post Offices in the centre of Lewes, one at the top of the town and one in the Cliffe.

"If the Post Office had responded sooner to my calls for the re-opening of the Cliffe branch, there would now be a sensible alternative to the closed Post Office on the High Street and people would simply have to walk down the hill. As it is, people either have to do without Post Office services or trek all the way to the Post Office in Landport.

"What is more, the walk to Landport is not an inconsiderable distance and is virtually impossible for people who cannot walk far and are also without private transport. I am therefore calling for Post Office Ltd to make a quick assessment as to how long it will be until the Post Office reopens and, if they think it will last for longer than 24 hours, to open a mobile surgery which could perhaps be located in the Magistrates Car Park."
