TORIES CONDEMN THEIR OWN ENVIRONMENT POLICIES - BAKER

In an unprecedented move, the Government and the Conservatives have supported the Liberal Democrat Opposition Day motion on climate change and the environment, even though it criticises Tory policies on the issue.

Commenting after the debate, Norman Baker MP, Liberal Democrat Shadow Environment Secretary, said:

"The scale of concern over climate change has been highlighted by this unprecedented move by the Government.

"Labour finally appears to be joining the Liberal Democrats in finding some consensus on how to tackle global warming. Sadly, the Tories are still way behind.

"By not forcing a vote on today's motion, the Tories have accepted the House's condemnation of its policies to weaken the Environment Agency and abolish the climate change levy, without providing a practical alternative.

"Hopefully, today's events signal a change in Tory policy for the good of the environment."
