Success as Moorfields Hospital caves in. Adrian Patrick can now have Infliximab, says hospital

The constituent whose case local MP Norman Baker took to the floor of the Commons in a personalised debate is finally to be allowed the drug he has so long been asking for.

Newhaven resident Adrian Patrick has a condition which is slowly leading him to become blind. His consultant at Moorfields Eye Hospital hospital has wanted him to be able to try a drug, Infliximab, which both and Mr Patrick believe has been effective in treating others with similar conditions, but their request was blocked by the management at Moorfields.

Norman Baker, after months of trying to sort out the issue with the management at Moorfields, finally took what he calls the "nuclear option" and on December 8th raised it in a full debate on the floor of the House of Commons, dedicated just to Mr Patrick. Following the debate, a new urgency appeared in the activities of Moorfields, and Mr Patrick has now been telephoned and told he can have the drug that might save his sight.

Norman says: "I am absolutely delighted at this result, though angry that it needed a debate in the House of Commons to secure for my constituent the sort of help he had a right to expect. I hope that this treatment will now be begun without further delay and that it is successful in retaining Mr Patrick's sight.

"This sort of result really makes me feel that my job is worthwhile. I am almost as happy as Mr Patrick."
