Local MP and Bishop of Lewes back Operation Noah

Local MP, Norman Baker, and the Bishop of Lewes, Wallace Benn, have today jointly voiced their support for Operation Noah, an environmental campaign organised by Christian Ecology Link and Churches Together in Britain and Ireland.

Operation Noah is a groundbreaking campaign which works through churches and community groups to help people understand and collectively respond to the problem of climate change. It also aims to demonstrate demand among the public for UK leadership on this issue. The Church says that Operation Noah is unlike any other environmental campaign in that it shows how the Gospel calls us to care for creation and for each other.

To raise the profile of Operation Noah and help with the campaign, Mr Baker and Bishop Benn will be holding a special church service at which they will both be speaking on Sunday 13th March at St.John Sub Castro, Lewes at 6:30pm. They will also be visiting a number of local primary schools to tell pupils about Operation Noah.

Local churches and community groups interested in joining the campaign can get more information from www.christian-ecology.org.uk/noah or from the Operation Noah Helpline on 01252 849904 (10am - 6pm).

Commenting on this, Norman said:

"I am delighted to join Bishop Wallace Benn in publicly supporting Operation Noah. This campaign plays an important role in letting people know that climate change is the most complex and serious challenge facing us all today.

"Climate change is not, as many think, something that will only affect people abroad or people in the future. It is here and it is now.

"Although it is true that the most devastating effects of climate change will probably first be felt in some of the world's poorest countries, such as Ethiopia and Sierra Leone, people here at home in the UK also face a constantly increasing risk of storm and flood damage. Over 1.8 million homes and 5 million people in the UK are at risk today and this number is set to rise if steps are not taken immediately to counteract climate change. Operation Noah is key in not only making sure people recognise climate change as a genuine problem but also in helping them to take positive steps of their own towards preventing it."

Bishop Wallace Benn said:

"Environmental change is a very important issue. Although some aspects remain in debate, the effect of climate change is already there for all to see. It is the most important threat we face as a planet, and action needs to be taken now.

"We have a responsibility under God for the right stewarding on the earth and her resources. I am delighted and grateful to be collaborating with Norman Baker MP on this issue."
