Key discussions have taken place within the Lib Dems on the improved prospects of winning the Arundel and South Downs constituency following the astonishing decision of Michael Howard to deselect sitting Tory MP Howard Flight.
The discussions have involved Lib Dem election supremo Chris Rennard and Lewes MP Norman Baker, whose seat adjoins Mr Flight's on the Ditchling / Hassocks border, as well as other leading Lib Dems locally. As a consequence, action is being taken to reinforce the already sturdy local Lib Dem campaign under the well-established direction of Derek Deedman, who stood for the seat in 2001. The Lib Dems came a clear second in 2001, and Howard Flight has already publicly warned that the mess could lead to the seat falling to the Lib Dems.
Norman Baker says: "It is unbelievable that Michael Howard should have decided that Howard Flight's political career should be ended simply because the MP made some slightly off-message remarks at a private event, remarks of course which may be perfectly true. And it is sickening to see his local Conservative constituency party both describe Mr Flight as a first-class MP and at the same time endorse Michael Howard's grotesque over-reaction.
"Howard Flight could not be blamed if he decided to stand as an Independent at the forthcoming General Election. The message his electorate will take away, however, is that the Tories are once again hopelessly divided and in meltdown mode, and that under the circumstances, the best thing to do will be to vote Liberal Democrat."
