Norman Baker Slams Government’s U-turn On Out of Town Supermarkets

Lewes MP, Norman Baker, has reacted furiously to Government plans to allow more out of town superstores, calling the proposals a ‘concrete catastrophe’. The comments follow an announcement from the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister, loosening controls on developers who want to build on green field sites.

The relaxation in planning permission for out-of-town stores is a radical change in the Government’s planning policies. Previously the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister, through reports such as ‘Towards an Urban Renaissance’ stressed the need to redevelop urban areas, and warned of the ecological threat of over building on green field sites.

Commenting on this Norman Baker says:

“I am horrified by these new proposals. The Government’s assault on green field sites will result in a concrete catastrophe, sucking the commercial life out of local towns, and tarmacing over rural areas which need protecting, not wrecking.

“John Prescott’s plan for creating so called sustainable communities is proving to be short-sighted environmental vandalism which is anything but sustainable. I suggest the Government take another look at the reports it has commissioned before it ruins small community based businesses in favour of out-of-town superstores.”
