All Aboard! Lewes MP Welcomes New Direct Brighton - Ashford Train Service

Lewes MP Norman Baker has today welcomed a new proposal by Southern Trains to introduce a new direct service between Brighton and Ashford International. This will now allow train users from Lewes and Polegate to travel direct to Ashford to pick up the channel tunnel Eurostar service, to France and Belgium.

Commenting on the new service, Norman said:

"I welcome this proposal by Southern. The new service to Ashford will prove popular with my constituents who want to travel to Paris and Brussels without having to travel via London. The present service to Ashford involves at least one change and is so slow that the leg train from Lewes to Ashford takes more time than the journey from Ashford to Brussels.

"Furthermore, by offering travellers to the continent a better rail service, this new service provides a welcome boost to efforts to cut emissions from road and air transport and to reduce congestion on our roads."

"I look forward to the introduction of the service by the scheduled start date of December 2005."
