At noon today, Thursday May 19th, Ian Cawsey MP entertained The Vegetarian Society at a House of Commons luncheon.
House of Commons catering staff, trained by The Vegetarian Society's Cordon Vert School, provided a vegetarian lunch to mark the launch of special National Vegetarian Week menus in all Palace of Westminster dining rooms next week. The House of Commons catering department are once again actively participating in this week-long initiative. The Vegetarian Society praises their enthusiasm and efforts.
Sir Paul McCartney said: "What could be better than enjoying great tasting food that is not only good for your health, but also far better for the planet and the creatures that live with us upon it?"
The Vegetarian Society's chief executive, Tina Fox, commented: "Whilst it is a privilege and a pleasure to enjoy fantastic food in exalted company, the real purpose of this dinner was to make a timely point to MPs that food labelling is an important issue, and that a legal definition of the word 'vegetarian' would make life easier and safer for consumers and the food industry alike."
Norman Baker MP congratulated the House of Commons catering department in actively taking part in NVW by promoting healthy options and reinforcing Her Majesty Government's 'Five fruit and Veg a Day' campaign.
Norman added, 'More has to be done concerning food labelling - it is important that customers are not misled - clear and honestly labelling should be available to all. The consumers' demand for clarity and honesty is rapidly becoming a significant political issue. I have tabled a Motion calling on the Government to introduce and promote clear honest labelling'
