Lewes MP and Lib Dem Shadow Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs Norman Baker has lent his support to a new campaign to make the government legally responsible for cutting greenhouse gas emissions – the prime driver of climate change. Norman recently joined fellow Labour and Conservative MPs, along with environmental campaign group Friends of the Earth and Radiohead singer Thom Yorke at a launch of the new campaign The Big Ask in Westminster.
Speaking after the launch, Norman commented:
“Climate Change is the biggest threat facing our planet and already we are witnessing its terrible consequences, such as devastating flooding in Lewes. Despite this, the UK and other countries continue to pump out carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gas emissions at an alarming and unsustainable rate and indeed, under Labour, carbon emissions have actually risen.
“73% of people questioned for Friends of the Earth do not believe that the government is doing enough to tackle climate change. It is tragic that for all the Prime Minister’s warms words on tackling climate change his government has failed to meet the perfectly achievable challenge of cutting emissions levels to a sustainable level, without having to resort to the use of nuclear power which brings irredeemable problems of its own.
“I am delighted to support this excellent campaign which calls for a new law on climate change in which the government would no longer be able to duck the issue, and would be made legally responsible for cutting the UK's carbon dioxide emissions by three per cent every year. Here is a chance for the Prime Minister to finally translate his words into action and set an example for the rest of the world to follow.”
