Lewes MP and Lib Dem Shadow Environment Secretary Norman Baker has today condemned the government for failing to get a sufficient grip on the UK’s burgeoning mountain of abandoned cars. Norman condemned the government’s appalling record after new figures he uncovered show that if laid end-to-end the amount of cars abandoned last year would be enough:
Commenting on this, Norman said:
“I am appalled at these new figures which show that last year over 220,000 cars were dumped in England – that’s the equivalent of 607 cars being dumped per day or enough to stretch from London to Berlin. In the Lewes district alone, the amount of cars abandoned last year – well over 1,000 – would be enough to stretch from Newhaven to Seaford.
“These figures clearly show that that the Government, which likes to pretend it is green, is in actual fact presiding over Waste Britain. This represents yet another entry to the long list of environmental neglect and decay with which communities, including those across the Lewes constituency, are blighted.
“By making the final owner of the car foot the bill until 2007, unlike virtually every other EU country, the Government is making dumping cars more attractive than recycling. If the government is serious about the environment then it must make recycling vehicles more attractive than simply abandoning them.
“Every abandoned car has ‘government incompetence’ written all over it. It is now high time that they put the brakes on Waste Britain.”
