Lewes MP Norman Baker has today condemned the terrorist attacks which struck the London transport system yesterday, causing the deaths of over fifty people and leaving hundreds injured. Norman was speaking on the floor of the Commons as news of the attacks reached Westminster yesterday, and subsequently then attended an emergency statement in the Commons in which the Home Secretary Charles Clarke informed MPs of the details of the bombings.
Commenting on this Norman said:
“These attacks are obviously a series of horrific and cowardly acts in which a few extremists have deliberately set out to inflict the maximum amount of mayhem and panic upon innocent people in London. I am sickened by the lengths to which they are prepared to go in order to try and undermine our democratic process.
“I and my fellow MPs were horrified to learn of the events unfolding as we attended the regular Environment and Rural Affairs questions in the Commons, but it was quickly resolved that we would continue with parliamentary business as usual rather than let it be disrupted as the terrorists would have wished.
“The emergency service response to these attacks has been one of the utmost professionalism and one to which many people must owe their lives. London is a resilient city which has stood up to fear before; the courage and stoicism of the people caught up in these attacks, commuters and emergency services alike, shows that we will never give in to those who wish to try and achieve their aims through violence.”
