Lewes MP helps launch climate change bill

Lewes MP and Lib Dem Shadow Environment Secretary Norman Baker has today called for a new law to make the Government legally responsible for cutting greenhouse gas emissions – the prime driver of climate change.

This follows the tabling of the Climate Change Bill last week in the House of Commons by Norman Baker, Labour MP Michael Meacher and Conservative MP Tim Yeo.

A new Climate Change law would set a legally binding target to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by three per cent every year and oblige the Prime Minister to report annually to Parliament on progress towards meeting the target.

Speaking after the launch, Norman commented:

“Climate change is the biggest threat facing our planet and already we are witnessing its terrible consequences, such as more extremes of weather, with increased flooding for example. Despite this, the UK and other countries continue to pump out carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gas emissions at an alarming and unsustainable rate and indeed, under Labour, carbon emissions have actually risen.

“We are slowly sinking under the advance of climate change yet Tony Blair appears more interested in rhetoric than real action, as his failure at the recent G8 summit illustrates. This Bill would not only force the government to take seriously its responsibility to secure significant reductions in greenhouse gas emissions but it would make cuts a legal responsibility. It would force the government to formally defend its position on the floor of the Commons on a regular basis.

“It’s about time the government stopped ducking the issue of climate change and committed itself to making the real and effective changes needed to avert an irreversible, environmental disaster”
