East Sussex not a good place to become ill

Local MP Norman Baker has expressed his strong concern over the performance ratings given to the Hospital Trusts that serve his constituents and says the performance ratings released by the Healthcare Commission today represent a serious indictment in particular of the management of the Brighton & Sussex University Trust.

The Trust, which runs the Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton and the Princess Royal Hospital in Haywards Heath, which serve the communities of Newhaven, Lewes and the villages has gained no stars for the second year running. The East Sussex Hospital Trust, which serves Polegate and Seaford has maintained its one star rating.

The ratings are based on performance against targets, which get progressively tougher each year and other indicators such as patient focus, clinical focus and capacity and capability.

Only last month Norman Baker expressed his deep concern about the running of Brighton & Sussex University Hospitals NHS Trust in a frank meeting with the Chairman and Chief Executive of the Trust.

Norman Baker says:

"There is now a real question mark hanging over the management of the Brighton & Sussex University Hospital Trust in particular. Every single indicator, whether it is today’s star ratings, the level of MRSA, or the morale of doctors and consultants, seems to be pointing in the wrong direction. Those leading the trust now have to convince the public they have a plan of action to deal with these matters, if they cannot do so, I frankly question whether they can remain in post.

"For my constituents, having well-run hospitals in which they can have confidence comes close to the top of their priorities. I suspect that for many, that confidence is lacking at present. Unfortunately the information released today will do little to change matters. It seems East Sussex at the moment is not a good place to become ill."
