Lewes MP and Lib Dem Shadow Environment Secretary Norman Baker MP has relaunched the party’s ‘Green Ministers’ – a group of MPs from each policy team who are charged with shadowing their particular government minister in order to hold them to account on the environmental performance of their department. Speaking after their annual party conference in Blackpool, Norman criticised the government’s “miserable failure to make environmental issues a higher priority” and contrasted it with the Lib Dem’s own commitment to making environmental concerns a key element of policymaking.
Commenting on this, Norman said:
"After eight years in power, Tony Blair is guilty of a miserable failure to make environmental issues a higher priority across government and has undermined real efforts from some of his Ministers to do so. The environment is not an add-on; it should run right through the heart of every department and inform every policy decision.
"Whether it is improving energy efficiency, reducing waste or conserving precious water supplies, the government should be setting an example for the rest of us to follow, rather than simply puffing out hot air and then carrying on with business as usual.
"When it comes to the environment, the Lib Dems are happy to put their words into action. This year we held the ‘greenest’ conference we have ever had: delegates carried their papers in reusable ‘bags for life’; they could minimise the impact of their transport to Blackpool by participating in our lift-share scheme; and, for the first time for a major political party, it was an officially “climate neutral conference” where all carbon emissions it unavoidably produced are neutralised through carbon offsetting projects."
