Lewes MP and Lib Dem Shadow Environment Secretary Norman Baker has called upon East Sussex County Council to invest in new solar-powered bus stops which will cut energy use and improve passenger safety. A similar scheme is now being introduced in London, where UK-assembled bus stops powered by solar energy have been specially designed to light up, even in the gloomiest conditions, at the touch of a button.
Commenting on his proposals, Norman says:
"This new technology is a chance to improve access to information for passengers, and improve safety as well. Since the energy used to light such bus stops comes from an on-site solar power canopy it will cost nothing to run and can be installed anywhere along a bus route since it negates the need to plug into the National Grid – something particularly suitable to rural areas such as the Lewes constituency.
"Moreover, the introduction of such bus stops in Sussex could assist the many bus passengers, particularly the elderly and the visually-impaired, who struggle to read the timetable in the dark, and reduce concerns about personal safety.
"The provision of this simple and win-win technology would be welcomed by thousands of bus passengers across Sussex. I therefore call upon East Sussex County Council to investigate the use of this technology in London forthwith, with a view to introducing it here in Sussex as soon as possible."
