Lewes MP, Norman Baker has reacted with outrage to the Government’s revelation that the Cliffe Cell in Lewes will not qualify for any funding under the Government’s flood protection scheme for at least the next three years.
In a parliamentary answer released almost five years to the day the terrible floods hit Lewes in 2000, Government Minister Elliot Morley was forced to make the confession that under Treasury rules, the so-called Cliffe Cell does not meet the priority threshold for flood defence funding and is unlikely to do so for at least three years.
Reacting to this Norman said:
"This situation is completely unsatisfactory. The Government had a wake up call with in 2000 with regard to the problem of flooding in Lewes, yet it now appears they have been able to go blissfully back to sleep on this issue without implementing the necessary measures to allow the people of Lewes to sleep easily.
"I have recently been in contact with the Association of British Insurers to discuss their recent report which highlighted the danger from flooding, properties in Lewes were continuing to face through lack of investment in flood defences and we will be working together to put pressure on the government to honour its commitment to provide proper flood defences for the town.
"It is outrageous that there is no money to spend on flood defences in Lewes. The threat of possible flooding in Lewes continues to be very serious and is not a problem that will disappear, unlike sadly the Government’s promises."
