Lewes MP secures cross-party cooperation on tackling climate change

Lewes MP and Lib Dem Shadow Secretary of State for the Environment Norman Baker has welcomed the decision of his Tory Counterpart, Oliver Letwin MP, to respond positively to Norman’s call for a cross-party initiative on tackling climate change. The announcement this week coincided with a crucial Commons debate on climate change, which was introduced during a Conservative opposition day.

Commenting on this, Norman says:

"The Liberal Democrats believe that climate change represents the most serious issue facing the planet today. This is why Charles Kennedy wrote to Tony Blair and Michael Howard before the last election, suggesting the creation of a cross-party agreement to tackle climate change. I wrote to both Margaret Beckett and Oliver Letwin after the election to follow this up.

"I am pleased that Oliver Letwin, on behalf of the Conservatives, has responded positively, and I agree with him on the need for year-by-year statutory carbon reduction requirements, subject to independent monitoring. It is a shame then that the Environment Secretary, Margaret Beckett, has so far refused to join these efforts.

"The Government is struggling to meet the targets it has set itself on cutting carbon emission levels and needs all the help it can get. The Liberal Democrats’ proposals to establish a cross-party consensus represent a constructive and positive way forward."
