Future of Drill Hall in Seaford still unclear - Baker

Local MP Norman Baker has reacted with dismay at the Ministry of Defence’s response to a written parliamentary question from him about the future of Drill Hall on Broad Street, Seaford.

The Hall has been used for a variety of functions since it was built, including as a concert hall for the Seaford Choral Society back in 1929. It is currently owned by the MOD and is used by the Number 2 Seaford Platoon, Sussex Army Cadet Force for training and meetings. However, over the years the building has been falling into disrepair due to a lack of funding from the MOD for its upkeep and is now on the ‘Buildings at Risk’ register compiled by Lewes District Council.

In an answer to a parliamentary question from the Seaford MP, the MOD claimed the various options for future uses were being reviewed and a decision had still not been made on the building’s future.

Commenting on this Norman said:

"I think it is highly unsatisfactory that a building such as this, which could provide an excellent meeting point for local community groups, has been allowed to fall into such as state of disrepair.

"The MOD has been putting off making a decision on the fate of this important building for years and at the same time letting the Hall fall into a state of disrepair. This has resulted in the situation we have now with the Hall rapidly becoming unsafe to use."
