Local MP Norman Baker has won a promise from Ing Fischer of the Highways Agency that they will "do their utmost to reduce the speed limit through Wilmington".
Earlier this month Norman Baker wrote to the Highways Agency to call for them to look at reducing the speed limit through Wilmington from 60mph to 40mph. The current speed limit is set at the national limit of 60mph, which makes turning out onto the A27 at the main Wilmington crossroads extremely hazardous for all road users. The section of road between Wilmington and Milton Street had in fact seen a temporary reduction in the limit from 60 to 40mph during road maintenance to the A27, but the limit has since reverted to 60mph.
Norman had also requested that a dedicated right hand turn lane be introduced to further improve safety at the junction. However this was turned down due apparently to the A27 being too narrow and the proximity of the road to both common land and nearby properties.
Commenting on this Norman Baker said:
"I am delighted that the Highways Agency is now minded to reduce the speed limit along this stretch of road. I have been very concerned about the safety of this crossroads, and particularly for those who have to turn right out of Wilmington onto a very busy A27.
"This decision will bring the Wilmington speed limit in line with the 40 limit through the village of Selmeston, which was also introduced following my request to the Highways Agency.
"I am disappointed however that a right-turn facility cannot be provided."
