Lewes MP Norman Baker has welcomed the news from the Highways Agency that they will begin construction of a right-hand turn facility at the Charleston Farm junction of the A27 in January 2006, following a call by the MP to improve the safety of the junction.
The work is part of the Highways Agency’s ongoing programme to improve safety along the A27 between Lewes and Polegate, which includes the installation of vehicle containment parapets over the railway line at Polegate and a signalised crossing across the A27 at Berwick.
Commenting on this Norman said:
"I am delighted to know of these new measures being put in place. The A27 can be extremely dangerous and I welcome moves that will improve the safety for all those that use the road.
"The turn to Charleston is a dangerous one and has seen a number of rear-end shunts. I have requested the Highways Agency install a right-turn junction here before and I am pleased that they have now confirmed a starting date for the work with me.
"In respect of the signalised crossing at Berwick, this will be useful for cycles and pedestrians, although the failure of the County Council to co-ordinate proper access to the crossing does not impress. This needs to be sorted out as soon as possible."
