Lewes MP Norman Baker has today revealed shocking statistics showing that under Labour, East Sussex schools come bottom of the class on classroom sizes. The Government’s own figures show that 32% of primary school children in East Sussex are being taught in classes of 31 pupils or more - far behind the 15% national average – despite Labour’s pledges to reduce class sizes for many of our children.
Commenting on this, Norman says:
"I am extremely concerned that, on classroom sizes, East Sussex schools are coming out bottom of the class, with a third of primary school classrooms packed with more than 30 children at a time.
"I am well aware - I have spoken with many local parents – that despite what Ministers claim, the Labour government and the Tory County Council are between them failing to provide properly for our children. These shocking figures show just how badly the two bodies have failed to get even the basics right."
"Large class sizes harm standards, affect discipline and are a major barrier to improvements in schools. Whilst the government and the County Council are not paying attention in class, our children’s education is suffering – it is high time that they finally make cutting class sizes the priority it should be."
