Lewes MP honoured for environmental achievement

Lewes MP and Lib Dem Shadow Environment Secretary Norman Baker has received a top honour from the UK’s leading professional body for waste and resource management. Norman received an Honorary Fellowship from the Chartered Institution of Wastes Management at a special dinner in central London this week in recognition of the special contribution he has made towards efforts to tackle the substantial problems the UK faces in disposing of its waste and the wider environmental issues involved.

Speaking after the dinner, Norman said:

"I am delighted to receive this award. It is a great honour to be recognised by such a well-respected institution that is working hard to highlight and tackle some of the most pressing environmental issues we face today.

"The current methods that we use to dispose of most of our waste, such as diverting it to landfill or incinerating it, are clearly not environmentally sustainable. We need to find new ways of both reducing the waste we generate in the first place, and of sustainably disposing of that which we unavoidably produce. The Liberal Democrats are committed to these principles and, as the party’s Shadow Environment Secretary I intend to continue to promote these at both a local and a national level."
