MP calls for college to re-consider closure of popular café

Newhaven MP, Norman Baker has today, written to John Blake, the head of Sussex Downs College, asking him to re-consider the college’s decision to close the café at its Denton Island Centre campus in Newhaven. The current plan is to replace the café with a selection of vending machines.

Norman has recently received a steady stream of letters and e-mails protesting at the college’s decision to close the popular facility. The café serves a range of fresh food and drink and acts as a popular meeting point for students and others who use the centre to discuss their work in a friendly, smoke-free environment.

Commenting on this Norman said:

"I am asking the college to re-consider their decision. I have received many letters from pupils and teachers who are incredibly upset that they are going to lose this café which has become an important meeting place. Its withdrawal also undermines the future development of the site.

"I appreciate the college must stay within its budget but it is without a doubt a backward step to close a café which serves fresh food and replace it with vending machines!"
