Plans for bridleway bridge at Itford must consider local countryside says MP

Local MP Norman Baker, has given a cautious welcome to the Highways Agency’s announcement that it is to implement a scheme to build a new bridleway bridge crossing for the South Downs Way over the A26 at Itford Farm near Beddingham.

The idea of the crossing is to provide a safer alternative for the walkers, cyclists and horse riders who use the South Downs Way. The scheme has been approved by both East Sussex County Council and Lewes District Council, and was drawn up in consultation with local environment groups and affected landowners.

Commenting on this Norman said:

"I welcome the idea of a bridleway bridge as it will improve the safety of both those using the South Downs Way and motorists travelling along the A26. However the final design must be sensitive with regards to the special character of the surrounding countryside. I am concerned that the particular design put forward may be unnecessarily long and bendy.

"The concept of this plan is very welcome, particularly for this stretch of road but I having seen the most recent plans I wanted to reiterate my concerns about the length of the lead in to the bridge on either side of the road, which I fear could stand out rather."
