Local MP, Norman Baker, has given his support to an International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) campaign to stop seal hunting in Canada and put in place a UK ban on seal products.

Norman gave his backing to the campaign at the House of Commons where IFAW launched their landmark report, 'Importing Cruelty', which documents the cruelty of Canada's commercial seal hunt. Canadian seal hunting is the largest marine mammal hunt in the world and has been responsible for the horrific death of more than one million seals between 2003-2005. Most of the seals killed were aged between 2 and 12 weeks old.

On the same day that IFAW launched its report, the Canadian government announced the quota for this year's seal hunt - 325,000 seals.

Commenting on the campaign Mr Baker said:

"I welcome IFAW's report which raises awareness of this important issue. Many of my constituents are very concerned about animal cruelty and I get a lot of letters from them asking me to take action to help end this cruel hunt. This is why I have been involved in the campaign to stop seal hunting for some time and have recently given my backing to IFAW's latest campaign. It is high time we put pressure on the Canadian Government to end to these barbaric practices."
