The residents of Towermill Place in Polegate will be forced to move out of the building. The unwelcome news was revealed to Polegate MP Norman Baker in a letter from Wealden District Council’s Director of Community Services. The letter is a response to Norman’s plea to the Council last month about the future of the housing scheme, which houses mainly elderly residents.
Wealden District Council now say that no matter what solution is eventually decided upon, the residents will be forced to move out of the premises. It is likely that this will be permanent, though it is possible it could be on a temporary basis while works are carried out.
The final fate of the scheme will be decided in a report, which will go before the Council’s Cabinet in May but this is still undergoing consultation. The Council has assured Norman Baker that they have taken into account the fact that the scheme’s residents are mainly elderly and, should redevelopment be necessary, they will try to accommodate the residents close to their family, and to Polegate.
Commenting on this Norman said:
"Unfortunately this looks very much like a no win situation for the residents at Towermill. Any option the Council opts for seems to involve the residents being forced out, probably forever. Even a temporary basis could be as long as twelve months.
I accept the view the council puts that Towermill Place falls well below the basic standards for council accommodation. Nevertheless, this forced move will come as a bitter blow to the residents who have done so much to establish a vibrant community together.
"The Council must do all it can to re-house the residents near to family and friends in the Polegate area. The Council’s letter has reassured me that they will be doing their best to treat the residents with respect and courtesy. I will however continue to keep my eye on the situation."
