County Council must listen to recommendation to refuse planning application for incinerator - Baker

Norman Baker MP welcomes yesterday’s decision by Lewes District Council Planning Applications Committee to recommend refusal of the planning application for the Newhaven Incinerator.

The meeting recommended to East Sussex County Council that the planning application be refused on eight separate grounds, including the effect the incinerator would have on any further plans for regeneration of Newhaven, the proximity of the structure to areas of outstanding natural beauty and the proposed National Park, the large amount of lorry traffic that is likely to be generated should the scheme go ahead and doubts over the possible effects on public health and the environment.

Commenting on this Norman said:

"I am delighted that Lewes District Council have recommended to the Tory-controlled East Sussex County Council that the application for the incinerator be refused. They are speaking up for the local community in a powerful way, which I applaud. I would strongly urge the County Council to listen to what local people are saying, rather than ploughing ahead with their hugely unpopular plan.

"An incinerator in Newhaven will be bad for the economy, bad for the environment, and bad for the community."
