Norman Baker, Lib Dem MP for Lewes, has welcomed the fact that discussions are still on-going with Community Transport in the Lewes Area (CTLA) over the future of the Dial-a-Ride service as a victory for common sense and urged the County Council today to do everything possible to retain the service. He has been informed that although there will have to be a reduction in service level, East Sussex County Council is having discussions with CTLA over the best way to reschedule the services whilst maintaining a service at the times of peak demand.
"I know how much the elderly and disabled rely on this service," Norman said. "If the plug is pulled on it, many people would no longer be able to get out and about and lead independent lives. I am encouraged to hear that discussions are taking place and hope that any cuts will be structured in such a way as to maintain a service at times of peak demand. Pensioners cannot afford to take taxis everywhere and many are not sufficiently fit to be able to catch a bus. The Dial-a-Ride is their lifeline."
