Newhaven incinerator would drain away 50 million litres of water, MP reveals

Norman Baker MP for Newhaven, today reveals that the proposed incinerator in Newhaven would require an annual water supply of approximately 50 million litres, the equivalent of 1.5 million showers.

The shock revelation, in a letter from South East Water’s Managing Director, Margaret Devlin, follows a request to South East Water for a domestic supply for the plant and a supply for fire fighting purposes. South East Water say they have a duty to provide these services unless the cost of doing so would be unreasonable, or put at risk their ability to fulfil their other obligations.

Commenting on this Norman said:

"In our area, we have mounting pressures on our water resources illustrated by the current hosepipe ban and a drought order. This can only increase with John Prescott’s ill-conceived plans for thousands of new buildings in the South East. It is madness to have to divert 50 million litres of this precious reserve for an unwanted incinerator. We already have less water per head of the population than they do in Sudan. Now the Tory County Council wants to divert a huge amount of what’s left to feed their incinerator.

"This represents another very good reason why the incinerator should not be built. It is quite absurd that during this period of water shortage across the south east this amount of water should be being allocated to the proposed incinerator."
