Norman Baker has given a very warm welcome to the County Council's decision to grant planning permission for a new school in Wivelsfield.
The new school will replace the old 150 year old building and will cater for 150 pupils. It will be sited in the centre of the village, and will use materials designed to blend into the surrounding buildings. The central location will mean more children will be able to walk or cycle to school. Cycle storage facilities and traffic safety measures are included in the design.
Commenting on the news Norman, who has campaigned for almost 10 years for a new school for the village, said:
"This is excellent news. Wivelsfield has been long overdue a new school.
"I am delighted that the County Council has granted permission for the school to be built, especially as they have done so without giving permission for more houses to be built as well. This I know was a major concern for the residents of Wivelsfield.
"I am especially pleased that the plan has made provision to encourage pupils to come into school by foot or by bike. It is good news not only for the children's health but for the environment too. I am encouraged by the Council's initial surveys which suggest only 7% of the children will be dropped at the new school by car."
