Norman Baker MP quizzes Mikhail Gorbachev. US has been 'ill with superiority complex' says former Soviet President.

Mikhail Gorbachev meets Norman Baker at a meeting of the All Party Group on Climate Change

Former Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev yesterday told Lewes MP Norman Baker that the US has been 'ill with a superiority complex' although he thought that the 'illness' was now past its peak and that the US, fortunately, has more than one face.

He was responding to a question from the Lib Dem MP and Chair of the All Party Environment Group, about the US government’s attitude to climate change. This exchange took place in a meeting of the All Party Group on Climate Change at the House of Commons in which Mr Baker quizzed Mr Gorbachev about whether the close relationship between the US arms industry, oil companies and the US government made it politically impossible for the US to introduce the radical changes necessary to tackle climate change in the timescale in which action must be taken.

Later, Mr Baker met the former Soviet President face to face and took the opportunity to congratulate him for his international efforts over 20 years. Mikhail Gorbachev is the recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize (1990), the Orders of Lenin, the Red Banner of Labour and the Badge of Honour. He is also President of The Gorbachev Foundation for Socio-Economic and Political Studies and Green Cross International. It was in that latter capacity that Mr Gorbachev was in London.

Commenting on the meeting, Norman Baker said:

"Mikhail Gorbachev is one of the great towering political figures of the last 20 years and I was deeply honoured to meet him. His work today for Green Cross International is very valuable in identifying solutions for huge international environmental challenges such as climate change and the threat of wars over water."
