Local MP Norman Baker is today tabling a number of Parliamentary Questions to Home Office Ministers following the recent publication of the report into prison conditions published by the Independent Monitoring Board.
Norman says: "The relentless increase in the prison population is putting a worrying degree of stress on Lewes prison. This report makes clear that overcrowding is now becoming a serious problem, and is affecting basic conditions. It cannot be right, for example, that two prisoners are having to share a cell, which also contains their toilet, separated off only by a curtain.
"To make matters worse, it appears that the long-promised refurbishment of the gymnasium, chapel and workshops is to be postponed yet again.
"I am also concerned at the number of prisoners with mental health problems who are being inappropriately placed in the prison. On my visits to the prison, I have seen prisoners there who clearly ought to be in a secure hospital, rather than a prison.
"I am today tabling a number of parliamentary questions to Ministers, to follow up the helpful report from the Monitoring Board."
