Local Lib Dem MP, Norman Baker, has spoken out following the revelation that East Sussex Hospitals Trust is likely to have to cut further jobs in order to reach a savings target of £1.2m in the coming year.
As a result of both a further reduction in the contracted levels of activity by Primary Care Trusts and an overspend of £136,000 in May, significant savings are being demanded from all directorates within East Sussex NHS Trust, which serves Seaford, Polegate and surrounding areas. The Facilities Directorate, the largest in terms of staff numbers and one of the largest in budgetary terms, is likely to be worst affected and redundancies may have to be considered if alternative jobs cannot be found for displaced staff.
Areas likely to face cutbacks are catering, housekeeping, security, portering, transport, staff accommodation, switchboard services and car parking.
Commenting on the situation, Norman Baker said:
"This is a very worrying development for local people. It seems perverse, to say the least, to see our local NHS in such severe financial difficulties at a time when there has apparently never been more public money being invested in the NHS nationally.
"There is little doubt that, even with the best efforts of local NHS staff who are doing an excellent job in increasingly difficult conditions, this will potentially have a serious impact on the quality of healthcare available to my constituents."
