Tory County Council tells District: Don’t Recycle More Than 27% of your Waste

Tory run East Sussex County Council has taken measures to try to cap the amount of recycling local District Councils, such as Lewes and Wealden, can undertake.

Information unearthed by local MP, Norman Baker, reveals that East Sussex County Council has capped the amount of recycling credits issued to Lewes and Wealden District Councils at 27% and 33% respectively of the total waste disposal amount. The County Council imposed these caps prior to a recent change in legislation. This legislative change allows for waste disposal authorities such as East Sussex County Council to now 'agree' with district councils, on the percentage of recycling to be achieved. Such 'agreement' is yet to occur at Lewes District Council, but has occurred between Wealden District and East Sussex County Councils. Neither district has yet reached the cap limit, but Wealden is very close, currently achieving a 30% recycling rate.

Commenting on these findings, Norman Baker said:

"The fact that the County Council is proposing with one hand to turn away recycled waste and with the other build a huge incinerator seems to me to be utterly ludicrous. It seems quite obvious that we should surely be recycling more and incinerating less. Presumably the county wants to ensure it has enough waste to burn."

Lib Dem Ouse Valley and Ringmer by-election candidate, Peter Gardiner, added:

"Local Lib Dems have campaigned long and hard against the Tory incinerator. We have always maintained that an incinerator could be avoided with higher recycling levels. The Tories are now trying to ensure that we'll never know by tying the hands of District Councils that want to recycle more."
