Regrettable loss of local heritage protection

Local Lib Dem MP Norman Baker, has expressed his regret on learning that three listed buildings with the Lewes Constituency have lost their protected status causing him concern that they may be allowed to fall into disrepair.

Buildings are 'Listed' because they are considered to be of a special architectural or historic interest and as a result require special protection. Listing protects the whole building, both inside and out and possibly also adjacent buildings if they were erected before 1st July 1948.

The owner of a Listed Building is tasked with ensuring that the property is maintained in a reasonable state of repair, thus protecting the building and its surroundings from changes which will materially alter the special historic or architectural importance of the property or its setting.

The three buildings in the constituency are on a list published by the Department for Culture Media and Sport. The buildings were amongst some 800 nationwide to have been de-listed in the last decade. They are: Upper Lodge Farmhouse, The Broyle, Ringmer; A Barn at South Heighton Farm, South Heighton; Starr’s Barn, Chalvington with Ripe.

Commenting on this finding, Norman said:

"Listed buildings are important for a community, as it helps to preserve local heritage. It is regrettable that three such buildings have been delisted locally, though we can take comfort that the number lost is quite small."
