Key guarantees on the future of port operations and the cross-channel ferry service will form part of the forthcoming sale of Newhaven Port.
The assurance was given this morning to the town's MP Norman Baker, in a top-level meeting with Denis Bellinger, Managing Director of Newhaven port and Properties at their headquarters. M Bellinger revealed that he expected the sale to include a 25-year agreement to allow the ferry to continue to operate between Dieppe and Newhaven, and demonstration by bidders of clear, costed and comprehensive plans to renew the ageing infrastructure of the port. The costs would be met through associated development on some port land, but this must not interfere with the ability of the port to operate in a full commercial way.
At the meeting, it was also confirmed that there are three bidders whom the French regard as "credible" and who have the necessary financial resources and expertise to carry through the work required to renew the port. A final decision on the preferred bidder is expected in December.
Norman Baker says: "I believe that the way this matter is being progressed by the French represents the best way forward for Newhaven and its port. There is clearly a need for substantial investment in the port, and that was always more likely to be forthcoming from the private sector than from a French local authority. It is also welcome that at last, after years of encouragement, the French are engaging sensibly with the planners in Lewes to secure the maximum financial return from disposal of land not needed for port operations, while ensuring that that land which is needed is protected.
"The new ferry boat demonstrates a significant commitment to the line and to the port. It is absolutely right that the sale of the port should only proceed if guarantees regarding the continued operation of the ferry can be assured."
