Local MP says incinerator permit approval is 'disappointing' but the battle goes on

Local Lib Dem MP, Norman Baker, has promised to continue the battle against the proposed incinerator at Newhaven in the wake of an announcement that Veolia ES South Downs Ltd has been granted a Pollution, Prevention and Control Permit (PPC) to operate there.

The decision to grant the PPC has been taken by the Environment Agency who are tasked with the regulatory role of ensuring that waste facilities are designed and operated to meet strict safety and design standards. The Environment Agency cannot refuse a permit based on the method of waste disposal or the proposed location.

The decision concerning the suitability of the proposed site for the incinerator at Newhaven and whether a Compulsory Purchase Order will be granted is the responsibility of East Sussex County Council who are likely to consider Veolia’s planning application towards the end of the year or early in 2007.

Commenting on the development Norman said:

"This is a disappointing but not unexpected development in the fight against the proposed incinerator at Newhaven. The Environment Agency is not in a position to reject the application based on the method of waste disposal or the location so it was always a likely possibility that a PPC would be granted.

"This development in no way diminishes our battle to stop the incinerator being built at Newhaven. The planning application for the proposed site, which has been lodged with East Sussex County Council, remains outstanding and it is a great pity that the Tory Council are still stubbornly refusing to listen to the wisdom of the people of Newhaven who are united in their opposition to this outdated and flawed technology."
