Norman Baker MP was praised this week by Raymond Blanc, internationally renowned Chef Patron of Le Manoir aux Quat' Saisons, for his support for the campaign to improve children’s health by banning junk food advertising on television before the 9pm watershed.
The local MP has added his backing to the campaign, and a parliamentary motion on the issue, following Ofcom’s announcement last month that they would only limit restrictions for junk food adverts to the traditional hours of children’s TV despite official figures which reveal that over 70% of the television watched by the average child watches is outside these hours.
The campaign has already attracted the support of over 300 health, consumer and children’s organisations and over 300 MPs.
Raymond Blanc said:
"Childhood obesity is at record levels; across Britain one in three children is obese or overweight. It’s time for politicians to take some tough action to improve children’s health and so I’m delighted that Norman has joined our call to protect kids from junk food adverts before 9pm."
Norman Baker added:
"The way in which junk food advertising is targeted at young people is quite frankly shameless given the frightening reality that many of today’s children will grow up with serious health issues as the result of a poor diet. A staggering 92% of children consume too much saturated fat and as many as 96% do not eat enough fruit and vegetables. The situation is now so bad that for the first time in a century life expectancy may fall with the result that more and more parents face the prospect of outliving their own children.
"The government needs to take action now to radically improve the nation’s health. There is a whole raft of far-reaching measures which urgently need to be implemented to achieve this and restricting the way in which junk food is advertised is vital. Ending junk food adverts before 9pm has the potential to help improve the nation’s eating habits to the extent that we could save millions of pounds every year on healthcare."
