Local MP uncovers further evidence of hazardous road conditions on A26

Local MP Norman Baker has recently secured more detailed figures showing the extremely poor crash record of the A26 between Earwig Corner and Oaklands Park. The statistics are further evidence of the extremely hazardous road conditions in this area.

The figures show that in the last three years there have been 38 crashes on this part of road, with 3 of these being serious, and one fatal. The A26 has long been notorious for its worrying safety record, and the recent serious accident at Paygate Cottages provided a further shocking example of this.

Norman Baker has expressed his concern at these new figures, which show that it is not only Paygate Cottages, but this entire stretch of the A26 which has a worrying crash record. Despite this East Sussex County Council have continued to take little action towards rectifying the problem.

Commenting on the issue, Norman Baker said:

"I am appalled by these figures. They are further evidence of the extremely hazardous road conditions on this stretch of the A26.

"The crash at Paygate in October highlighted the dangers of the road in this area and these new figures show that there is an extremely poor crash record not only at Paygate, but all the way from Earwig Corner to Oaklands Park.

"What is needed is not the half-measures suggested by the Council, but a major rethink of traffic safety in the area. It is unacceptable that the Council has left the situation unamended for years since the botched scheme to straighten the A26."
