Local MP Norman Baker today expressed his sense of disappointment at the impending closure of the Gardner Arts Centre. The Arts Centre has had to close after two of its most important financial backers both withdrew their support in rapid succession, with the problems caused by Brighton and Hove Council’s decision to end its £30,000 annual grant being compounded by the Arts Council for the South East’s decision to cease to continue its annual £190,000 in funding.
Speaking on the issue, Norman commented, “I am incredibly disappointed to hear the news that the Gardner Arts Centre will close to the public. Over the years the Gardner Arts Centre has contributed greatly to the cultural life of not just the local area, but also Sussex as a whole. Indeed, I visited the arts centre with my young daughter only last weekend, and so can sympathise on a personal level with those who will mourn the demise of this valuable community resource.
I understand Brighton and Hove Council say they wish to concentrate their spending in the city. It seems they want to argue that Falmer is in the city when it suits them, and not when it doesn’t. I hope that the Council and Arts Council will reconsider their decision.”
