Local MP Norman Baker today expressed his concern that not one public meeting about the proposed restructuring of the NHS in East Sussex is planned to take place in his Lewes constituency, and that only three such consultation meetings are planned for the whole of East Sussex - in Hastings, Eastbourne, and Uckfield.
Speaking on the issue, Norman said, "It is not acceptable that East Sussex Downs and Weald Primary Care Trust plan public meetings as part of a consultation exercise, and then leave an area as large as a parliamentary constituency out of the process. Is this to say that the opinions of people in towns such as Lewes, Seaford, and Newhaven count less than those in other areas?
"I have made an urgent request to Nick Yeo, the Chief Executive of the PCT in question, to agree to at least one, and preferably two public meetings in my constituency as part of the consultation. I feel that this will not only add to the overall quality of the outcome of the process, but also that such a meeting would further the legitimacy of the process as a whole. It is unacceptable in particular that Seaford, with a population of over 20,000 and which looks to the DGH for its acute services, should not have a meeting programmed in.
"The proposed restructuring of the NHS in our region will have profound implications for my constituents, and it is only fair that they gat a chance to have their say on the matter."
