Local Lib Dem MP, Norman Baker, has today been elected Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Group on Flood Prevention following his active campaigns on flood related issues at both a local and national level.
The local MP, who is also Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Environment Group, is renowned for his active role in pushing for more joined-up thinking in Government with regards to tackling flooding and climate change. Mr Baker has also worked closely with local flood group, Lewes Flood Action, and the National Flood Forum on campaigns for more comprehensive funding for flood defences from the Treasury in light of figures predicting a £700m funding shortfall over 15 years.
Norman will next week lead a delegation from Lewes to meet with DEFRA Minister, Ian Pearson to discuss the issue of flood defences and keep up the pressure on the government in order to get a fair deal for the town.
Commenting on his election, Norman Baker said:
"I am delighted to have been elected as Chair of the Group. This is obviously an issue of particular importance to those people living in and around Lewes who were profoundly affected by the floods in 2000 so I am pleased to be able to represent them further in Parliament in this way.
"I will be using this position to continue to do all I can to try and push the government towards a more co-ordinated approach of tackling flooding and related climate change issues. Economic models show that money spent on flood defences produces a return six times greater than if the money were not spent so. In particular, I hope to be able to put my new role to good use in my campaigns for better funding provision for flood defences."
