Lewes MP Norman Baker has helped save an important local bus service from being stopped by East Sussex County Council.
East Sussex County Council had proposed suspending part of the number 128 service which covers South Downs Road, Mayhew Way, Spences Lane, and part of Malling Street, for two weeks due to road works being carried out on Malling Hill. Many of those who use the number 128 are elderly and rely on it to provide them with transport to and from the town centre.
However under pressure from Norman Baker and local residents, the county council has now agreed to Norman’s suggestion that the route of the 128 service be reversed to run anti-clockwise around these streets, thus preserving an invaluable transport link.
Commenting on the issue Norman Baker said:
"I was approached by a number of elderly local residents, understandably concerned that they were to be left stranded without a bus for two weeks because of road works.
"I am delighted the county council has agreed to the suggestion I put to them, namely that the route could be reversed for the duration of the road works, thus enabling the route to continue to operate. I am grateful to the county for their flexible and helpful response."
