ITV suspends call tv premium rate phone lines pending review

Commenting on today's decision by ITV to temporarily suspend all premium interactive services in television programmes on all channels pending a complete review by an independent auditor, Lib Dem MP Norman Baker said:

"This move is long overdue but I am nevertheless pleased that ITV are finally acknowledging the level of concern surrounding interactive programmes and taking action on the matter by commissioning an independent review.

"This is not, as is widely understood, simply an issue of the cost of the phone calls themselves, which is exorbitant, but about whether the procedures that TV companies have adopted for handling viewers' calls are unfair and exploitative. Far too many of these quiz shows, such as The Mint, appear to be little more than money making scams designed to take the place of advertising. It is high time that these shows were looked into by an independent party and I welcome the fact that ITV have set this in motion."
