Lewes MP demands call in of incinerator plans

Lewes MP Norman Baker has formally written to Ruth Kelly, the Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government, to urge her to "call in" the decision of East Sussex County Council to approve the plans for an incinerator at Newhaven.

In his letter Norman outlines his main concerns over the proposed facility, which include:

Speaking on the issue, Norman said, "This proposed incinerator is being forced upon the people of Newhaven by the Conservative County Council, which has refused to listen to both the concerns of local residents, and the many reasoned arguments against it. I am asking the Secretary of State to call in this planning application, so she can impartially review the fact of the case, and come to a reasoned decision.

"My constituents quite rightly feel totally let down by the actions of the County Council, and need to be reassured that their views will be heard at the highest levels."
