Local Lib Dem MP Norman Baker has welcomed today’s announcement from Greene King that they are permanently reinstating Harvey’s beer in the Lewes Arms.
The popular local brew, which was removed by Greene King late last year and replaced with its own beers, has been re-ordered for the pub today and will be on sale towards the end of next week following a few days of secondary fermentation in the pub’s cellar.
In their statement released earlier today Greene King acknowledged the unique place that the Lewes Arms has in the town and that they had underestimated the depth of feeling amongst local people when they took the initial decision to remove the beer.
Commenting on the decision, Norman said:
"I am absolutely delighted that Greene King is re-instating Harvey’s in the Lewes Arms. I have been in regular contact with Greene King since Harvey’s was removed from the pub last year and this is without a shadow of a doubt the right decision to take. I commend Greene King for recognizing the special role of both Harvey’s and the Lewes Arms within the local community and for acting accordingly.
"The local campaign to bring back Harvey’s to the former brewery tap has been a wonderful example of how much can be achieved when a small group of people campaign on an issue they feel strongly about. I congratulate the combined efforts of all those who organised and took part in the campaign to bring back the local beer. Now, however, it is important that we put the past in the past, let bygones be bygones and go back to fully supporting the Lewes Arms in the way that local people always have done."
