Baker congratulates Wyevale on patio heaters decision

Local MP Norman Baker has congratulated gardening chain Wyevale after it decided to stop selling patio heaters due to concerns over their detrimental impact on the environment.

Mr Baker, who has spoken out against the damaging effects of patio heaters in the past, welcomed the decision and called on Wyevale’s competitors, such as B&Q, Focus and Homebase to follow suit.

Wyevale took the decision amid growing opposition to the sale of patio heaters, which emit up to seven kilograms of carbon dioxide for every two hours that they are in use.

Commenting on the issue Norman Baker said:

"I welcome this decision from Wyevale. They have shown a level of environmental awareness that appears to be peculiarly missing from their competitors.

"Patio heaters are an environmental abomination. It is absurd for people to attempt to heat up the open air. They should be reaching for a jumper rather than a patio heater.

"Given the amount of carbon dioxide which these things emit, I hope that other gardening chains will be following Wyevale’s lead at the earliest possible opportunity. With the smoking ban imminent it is all the more imperative that the public are made aware of the effect patio heaters have on the environment, and the number of them on sale is limited."
