East Sussex County Council has been accused of creating "Seaford’s greatest eyesore". Now the town’s MP Norman Baker has demanded action over the run down and derelict state of Elm Court, Blatchington Road.
Elm Court was a thriving youth centre, but was closed by the Tory County Council to save money. Now the site has been left derelict and has become an eyesore. Mr Baker has received complaints from local residents who say that the property has been allowed to go to rack and ruin, that vandalism is occurring, and that their own property prices have been adversely affected.
In response, Mr Baker wrote to the Chief Executive of the County Council, Cheryl Miller, who replied that the Council is starting the process of selling off the property for redevelopment. She has given her assurances that in the meantime the Council will take steps to maintain the site.
Speaking on the issue, Norman said "I am astounded that the County Council has allowed the Elm Court site to deteriorate to the state that it is in today. Not only has the County Council closed a much-valued community facility, but they’ve now added insult to injury by allowing such an eyesore to be created.
"I have asked that as an interim measure, the County Council acts to maintain the site so that the problems that it is causing to local residents can be mitigated. This includes asking the Council to rebuild the fencing around the site so as to prevent further vandalism, and to cut the grass in the grounds in order to improve the appearance of the area.
"I will keep up the pressure on the County Council on behalf of my Seaford constituents until this matter is resolved to their satisfaction."
