Lewes MP Norman Baker has rejoined the Lib Dem Shadow Cabinet after an absence of more than a year. In an announcement made today (Tuesday) by party leader Sir Menzies Campbell, Norman was appointed as Shadow Cabinet Office Minister and Shadow to the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster.
In 2006 the local Lib Dem MP turned down the opportunity to continue as Shadow Environment Secretary upon the election of Sir Menzies (whom Norman had backed for the leadership) for a number of reasons. One of these was in order to free up time to investigate the death of the weapons inspector David Kelly. That work is now almost complete and the MP will in the autumn be publishing a book detailing the findings of his investigations.
Norman says:
"I wanted to take a break from the front line and am sure that that was the right decision. Equally, I am now pleased to be back in the Shadow Cabinet in what could well be our last reshuffle before the General Election.
"My new role is a wide one, delving into the organisation, structure and mechanics of government, identifying waste, inefficiencies and bad practices, and holding the new Brown administration firmly to account. Ming has asked me to rattle some cages, and I fully intend to do so."
